One of the key aims of Abundance Edinburgh is to encourage and help others start fruit harvesting projects in their own neighbourhood. Recently we received a grant from Zero Waste Scotland that we hope will help us do that.
We have used the grant to buy equipment for juicing apples. To encourage other people as well as ourselves to make use of this fantastic kit, we’d like to open it up for use as a community resource.
If you or your organisation would like to make use of the equipment to juice lots of fruit at harvest time, then get in touch and we will do our best to help out. Apple days make great events, and are popular with all ages – it’s something everyone can participate in and enjoy.
The equipment we have is listed below :
The 12 litre press

12 litre cross beam press

12 litre cross beam press
This is the more ‘portable’ of our presses, and weighs only 30kg(!)
The rack and cloth press

The rack and cloth press

The rack and cloth press
The rack and cloth press is a beast, and can be used for pressing up to 45kg in one go, which could give you as much as 30 litres of juice. It’s very heavy (65kg), and so will need 2 people to move it safely. It’s ideal for public events where you want to make lots of juice whilst showing people how it is done.
The classic crusher

The classic crusher

The classic crusher
The classic crusher is for scratting fruit the old-fashioned way. It is hand cranked, and can be used over a bucket or the 12 litre press. It’s lots of fun to have an go, and provides a way for people to help out with the juice making. The jaws can be quite dangerous, so it’s use must be supervised.
We also have an electric “fruit shark” on order, which can process large amounts of fruit very quickly.
Fruit picking and juicing sundries

food grade tub and buckets

funnels and siphon tubes for bottling

Berry pickers and fruit scoop
The flexi tub holds 40 litres, and the buckets 33 litres. Both are made from food grade plastic. The siphons and funnels are to aid with bottling of juice. The berry pickers are helpful for picking blaeberries, haws, sloes, etc. We also have a couple of 3m extendible fruit picking poles.
Brewing equipment

6 gallon (25 litre) carboys and crates of Edinburgh cider
We have 2 slightly melted, but otherwise functional carboys which hold 6 gallons or 25 litres. We also have numerous demijons. And thanks to our recently departed brewer Pessi, we also have crates and crates of fantastic Edinburgh cider from the 2010 harvest. Come along to one of our events this year if you’d like a taste.
The classic crusher and the presses can be seen in action on the Abundance Edinburgh Facebook page:
